Thursday 9/15 Art show opens with the play preview…The deadline for submissions will be about August 15th So we need to get going on this one!. 9/16 - 10/16 (Additional Sunday performance on last weekend)

In 1929, New York stockbroker Bill Wilson plunged hard with the stock market crash and became a desperate alcoholic. Through amazing events, Wilson met Ohio surgeon Dr. Bob Smith, an alcoholic for 30 years who operated with crushing hangovers. Together with their wives, who went on to develop Al-Anon Family Groups, their discoveries have touched and saved countless lives.

"The play is not only entertaining; it is a powerful portrayal of the start of one of the most remarkable events of all time-the birth of AA!" Robert Lindsey, president National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc.

It's Christmas in the third smallest town in Texas. Radio station OKKK news personalities Thurston Wheelis and Arles Struvie report various, zany Yuletide activities, including hot competition in the lawn display contest. Many colorful, wacky Tuna denizens appear to join in the holiday high jinx. This play is a pure delight for all ages, a great way to celebrate the holidays.

In addition to these opportunities we have our annual theme show at the Sandy Library in April. We need to come up with a theme. Perhaps you can think of something that fits the NEWLY IMPROVED and REMODLED theme.

Or ??????? Give it some thought over the summer, then we can choose a theme at the October meeting.

Happy New Year fellow WAG members!

With another year logged in to the record books let’s take look back at what’s been accomplished these past twelve months and then look ahead to 2011.

-Website up and running, thanks to Debi Vann, Cherokee Designs, LLC.

-Thanks to Z’anne Bakke for creating our Blog and to Rod Stroh for setting up our email.

-We presented a very successful exhibition at Sandy Library in April, for both sales & exposure.

We have new exhibition opportunities at the Sandy Actors Theater. Thanks to Becky Hawley

We had a public presence at the Sandy Mt. Festival, at Heritage Days in Government. Camp and through out the town of Sandy, in window displays, thanks to all the participating artists.

-Kids outreach has gotten off to a good start with Becky Contreras, Becky H, Martha Reel, Rod Stroh and Kim Tutttle, all of whom have worked with kids on a variety of projects.

-Solace in Silk held several workshops and presented scarves. Thanks to many participating members and to the SS team, Kate Conrad, Kathryn de Vries, Becky H., Syd Kruze & Martha R.

-Figure drawing group met regularly and was well attended. Thank You Kate Conrad

-We had a excellent workshops: Raku, put on by Bruce Beattie, Italic Writing, by Cheryl Hooley,

and Bead Earrings, by Kathy Murawski.

-“SEE THE RIVER THROUGH ARTISTS EYES” an inspirational walk along the Clackamas River, organized by Joan Ragan and Becky H.

Looking forward to 2011….We will continue all three of our special projects, Solace in Silk, the Theater Exhibitions and Kid’s Outreach , all of whom have all been given minimum funding by the Board in next year’s budget. It’s up to you, the members of the Guild, to decide which of these projects you would like to see expanded in the coming year. Let’s take a look at where we stand on each project individually.

Solace in Silk (SS) was funded as an “annual” project with seed money from the general budget. SS has been our annual project for the past 2 years. We met the 50 scarves target, set by the committee, for the chemo patients and had $413 left for even more scarves! This December, 16 additional scarves were finished and donated with more in the works. This project involved soliciting donations to finance it’s goal and was a financially self-sustaining project. At this time $258 still remains in the SS fund. This project will continue to benefit from future targeted-donations. The project could be chosen to receive additional Guild funding.

The Sandy Actors Theatre has committed to put up a rail-hanging system for wall art and halogen track lighting to show art in its best light. We have already taken in $88 **in donations from our first art show this season and in return we have pledged $100 to the theater to defray their expense for the improvements. The donations from the upcoming 3 shows will more than cover that pledge. The project goal is to enhance the lobby with the art exhibitions, making the theater-goers experience even more enjoyable and this in turn will encourage SAT to provide artists with public exposure for their work. These free play previews/receptions are an excellent way to expose folks to the little gem of a community theater we have here, in the heart of the Mt. Hood Corridor.

This project is financially self-sustaining through donations at the door on preview-reception night.

But, your participation is critical in two ways; first, we need you to invite everyone you know to come to our preview-reception nights and second, please contribute artwork to the exhibits.

**It should be noted that last spring, our preview night for “Crimes of the Heart” brought in $196 in donations to Solace in Silk. This has been a wonderful collaboration between two arts groups.

Kid’s Outreach has provided 60 first graders with art classes, making plaster hand-imprints and steppingstones and has purchased materials for 90, 5th grade heliographic art, projects for next spring. That’s 150 projects for $226 or $1.30 per child. (If you do the math and it doesn't make sense, that’s because we still have a small amount of material leftover.) We have $50 in the budget for a class to do clay projects in the spring. Another function of outreach is to find young folks who would participate in the Guild. We will mentor them and help them by funding their participation in our workshops and events. Kid’s Outreach is not a self-sustaining program and would benefit from your targeted-contributions, donated specifically to this program. Kid’s Outreach could be chosen to receive more Guild funding.

We want you to know our current status, so can you think about where you want the Guild to focus its remaining financial resources in the coming year. We have a carryover beyond our bare bones budget to cover short-falls in projected dues and unanticipated expenses.

We’ve set aside seed money to fund an entirely new “annual” project, when one presents itself. An annual projects should be self-sustaining and repay the seed money back to the treasury. The seed money rolls forward year after year to fund subsequent annual projects.

We also have some funds that could be spent on workshops and activities, or to enhance the funding to the existing three special projects that are ongoing. This is where the Board needs your input.

Our goal for 2011 is to expand our artistic horizons through education and networking. We can do this for ourselves and others through workshops and other “inspirational” opportunities. Kids are our future. We hope to find suitable high school candidates for a free guild membership-mentoring.

Let’s hear the ideas you might have for new projects, speakers at our meetings or new art avenues to explore. Please, give us your opinion on where you would like to see focus in the coming year.

“IT’S A CIRCUS!” OPENING ON THE MOUNTAIN
The artists’ reception at the Mt. Hood Cultural Center Museum will be on June 26 from 4-6pm. Bring finger foods and some friends! We will provide liquid refreshments. By the end of the month the days will be long and we should have fine weather.

Congratulations to Edna Kennel on the sale of a watercolor from the It's a Circus Show at the Sandy Library.

SANDY MOUNTAIN FESTIVAL
The Guild will have a booth at the Sandy Mountain Festival. Nothing will be sold on site, but we would like members to have one piece on the table to represent the diversity of the group and we'll put business cards with the piece. We’re allowed to have the Bio Book there. We'll hand out Guild info and talk about what we do. More details will come from Shirley Nelson, who is looking for volunteers for the booth: shirleynelson1@hotmail.com

ARTIST ERIC JACOBSEN
Last month’s program featured Eric Jacobsen, a landscape painter from Glenwood, Washington. He trained at the Lyme Academy in Connecticut. Painting on Location, Eric emphasizes capturing the mood rather than details. He recommended the book, Hawthorne on Painting, a series of classroom notes and writings about her husband’s teaching collected by Mrs. Charles W. Hawthorne ($5.95 at Amazon). Other artists who inspired his style are Emil Gruppe; Sergei Bongart; Levitan; John Twachtman. He said he likes to try to “paint so loose, the painting almost falls apart, yet it doesn’t.”

He led a lively discussion on the Plein Air movement, pigments, and working with galleries. He is represented at Art on the Boulevard in Vancouver, as well as other galleries.

CRIMES OF THE HEART/SOLACE IN SILK
During the 2 nights of Previews for Crimes of the Heart we had 7 scarves go out, leaving us with 13 long and 13 square scarves. The project has been a lot of work, but fun. We will be scheduling a work party or two, to create 2 dozen more scarves and package them for the donation to the chemo folks. Watch for updates by email. By the way, the play was very well done! It runs until June 19.

MEMBER ACHIEVEMENTS
Alex Farnham can be found at McmEnamin’s Edgefield every Saturday from noon to 7:00 PM demonstrating glassblowing.

FIELD TRIP
Joan Ragan is organizing a "See Through Artists Eyes" nature walk for late July.

IN MEMORIUM
Longtime former member of the Guild, Dave Enna, has passed away. He and his wife, Sue, are potters from Welches. A memorial was held May 16th at McMenamin’s Edgefield.

“IT’S A CIRCUS!” OPENING
The theme show opened thanks to a fabulous crew who hung the show. The reception was a lovely event with so many people pitching in and exhibiting their pride in the Guild as well as their work. Thanks to everyone who supported one another in this effort. A big THANKS to Gail for the music. Congrats to the four members who received monetary kudos for their work: Russell Pearson for his chainsaw carved bear, Patty Henniger for her clownish frog, Joanne Rohweder for her watercolor and Rod Stroh for his photograph. The tour through the library gave each artist a chance to describe their process and was well received. Granted, there was much “clowning around!”

A special thanks from the President to everyone who contributed to the success of this year’s theme show and reception!

LAST MEETING AND RAKU FIRING
Bruce Beattie gave an informative talk on clay, from the origin to the building process, firing and glazing. The Raku at his shop on June 13, was discussed and more details will go out by email and will be available at the May 10 meeting. If you took clay home from the April meeting be sure to bring it back to the May meeting for firing.

You are invited to participate with your cloth or mixed media doll(s).These can be 3-D or 2-D Paper Art Dolls. Please supply a stand or support for your free standing entries.

GUILD ART INSTALLATION DEBUT
The Guild's "Curves" art installation, in the Subway - UPS Store strip center, is up and looks great. Thanks! to Mike Lindstrom, a participating artist and Manager at Platt Electric for the lighting. Also participating: Becky Hawley (Curator), Kathryn deVries, Inga Ojala. The second space "The Post" is on Proctor in a pink building on the left past the old Gardener Plumbing. Featured artists are Ann Fenwick, Zdena Neszmery and Kate Conrad. As spaces become available more art will be needed.

The Theme Show comes down at the Library Tuesday June 1. The work will travel to the Mt. Hood Cultural Museum to hang on June 24. The reception there is on Sat. June 26, 4-6pm.

"Spring into Town" First Friday May 7 5-9pm. Showing at the Sandy Historical Museum will be Kathryn de Vries, Patty Henniger and Becky Hawley. Go see their work, support them and have a cookie!

The Multnomah tribe affectionately referred to Mt. Hood as "Wy'east" Its peak, at 11,239 feet, is home to 12 glaciers. From our perspective here at Strohaven, we can view the sun coming up from behind, creating the "Morning Event" as I call it. It goes very well with our morning coffee. To finish the day, the evening sun casts beautiful warm colors on the mountain, often creating spectacular effects.

I found this great website almost two years ago. Zentangles are meditative doodles that help to calm the mind and kick start the right side of your brain. Sometimes before I start a project, I'll work up a couple of Zentangles to set my mind in arty mode. The great thing about these little doodles is....you don't have to know how to draw. All you need to know is how to draw a line, over and over and over again.

Saturday December 5 the Wy'east Artisans Guild will host a Kid's Craft table from 12:30 to 5:30 in downtown Sandy, Oregon. We will be doing "Stained Glass" projects using waxed paper, crayons and tissue paper. Come on down to the AEC building next to the Double Dragon restaurant just west of the Ace Hardware.

November Meeting

Our next meeting will be November 9th. Edna Kennel is presenting the program at 7:00 p.m. Edna will talk a little about her 25 years as a commercial artist and will bring a number of paintings to discuss.

Social time begins around 6:30 p.m. The business meeting will start at 8:00 p.m., lots of new things coming on the horizon so hope you will stick around and be part of our future.
